    Story

Ayase Reiji, used to be his high school's soccer champ. However, he made the choice to give up soccer when he went into his sophomore year of university. On the day he finally comes to terms with himself over his reasons for quitting the sport and decides that he should pursue it again, he gets in an accident on his motorbike.

The accident was bad, and Reiji was rushed to an urgent operation, and was fortunate enough to come through the operation all right. However, he will still have to spend a while in the hospital recuperating from his injuries, with the knowledge that now that he had finally decided to return to soccer, his life as a soccer player is now over.

Now Reiji passes his days in recuperation at the hospital, meeting five other boys that are in the same hospital ward, each with their own troubles. Can perhaps Reiji build up a relationship with one of these boys, and begin a new take on life?

    Cast

Ayase Reiji - Reiji is the main character of the story, a sophomore in a prestigious private university who was an esteemed soccer player in highschool. He was injured in a traffic accident and is now rehabilitating in the hospital, upset that his life as a soccer player is over. He also mourns for his brother Kazuya, who shared his dreams of soccer, and blames himself for his brother's death. Seiyuu: Hiyama Nobuyuki.

Yabashi Shingo - Shingo is a trouble-making boy who is a bit haughty and quick to mouth off, but underneath he has a very strong, unyielding spirit. He was raised by strict parents, but failed his exams to a private school on purpose to revolt. He is Reiji's neighbor, and comes to visit Reiji in his sickroom often, to receive tutoring from him, even though oftentimes he doesn't need it. Seiyuu: Mizushiro Arisa.

Azawa Akira - Akira is a very serious, courteous boy, who has a strong sense of obligation. He is the student chairman and also manages the drama club of his school, writing the script for the school play for the cultural festival. He visits his mother in the hospital's mental ward often, where she is staying from going mad over the death of Akira's father. He has a strong sense of responsibility, since he takes care of his younger siblings due to the absense of their parents. Seiyuu: Kodama Satomi.

Karasaki Keisuke - Keisuke is a bright and energetic boy who is part of the soccer club at his school. Even though he is small in stature, he is one of the central players on his team. He injured his leg in the last semi-final game for his area, and goes to the hospital regularly for orthopedic work so that he can play again. Reiji helps to teach him soccer techniques on their visits. Seiyuu: Sakuragawa Mia.

Hira Haruka - Haruka was born with a weak body, and has to stay in the hospital regularly because of this. He is a bright and intelligent boy, and enjoys reading lots of books, mainly because he has nothing else to do in all his time spent in a sickroom. He yearns to know more about the outside world, feeling stuck behind the white hospital walls. He's from a rich family, but his parents never have the time to visit him, instead sending him gifts, but he longs to have someone around to talk to, and Reiji fills in this role. Seiyuu: Ogura Yui.

Seta Kaoru - Kaoru is a mysterious boy who appears at night in Reiji's room, mistaking him for someone called "Junichiro," and asking him to visit him in the old abandoned C Ward of the hospital. Nobody knows much about him, or why he is there. Seiyuu: Hatano Kazutoshi.

Mitsui Takuya - Dr. Mitsui is the head of the pediactrics division at the hospital. He is an elite doctor who's grandfather is a chairman on the Board of Directors for the hospital. Although he has many women admirers due to his appearance and status, he treats them very coldly; he seems to have more of a liking for the young boys he sees in the hospital ward. Seiyuu: Midorikawa Hikaru.

Katada Shuuzou - Shuuzou is the doctor who takes care of Reiji, and is the orthopediacs division manager. He is very clear-cut in his views when it comes to work. Seiyuu: Gouda.

Ishiyama Emi - Emi is a good-natured nurse, who is liked by all the patients. She is a bit scatterbrained and can forget things, but is kind and likable none-the-less. She is very into fortune-telling and gossip. Seiyuu: Not listed.

    Playability

Shounentachi no Byoutou plays in the typical style of boys' love games, where you make different selections, "choose your own adventure" style, which lead to different outcomes.

You start out in your hospital room, and the game takes place for the two weeks you are in the hospital. Each day you get a choice of different locations that you can visit, and some locations only become available if you meet certain people. You can choose to stay in your room, go to the nurse's station, visit the waiting room, go to the roof, go outside, go to the hall outside your room, visit Haruka's room, or visit the C ward. You get to visit two locations a day. When you visit different locations, you meet different people. Usually a certain character will frequent a certain location. Picking the correct options from the dialogue when you meet them determines if you advance your relationship, gaining CGs of that character, and leading to their ending.

There are two endings for each boy, and one bad ending for three of the five boys, and a total of 50 CGs to collect. Since the game only plays for 14 days, it is very quick, so it isn't hard to replay in order to snag all the CGs. The CGs that you have won are displayed in an album from the main screen, which opens up after you've won the game at least once.

While it sounds rather simple to get an ending, be aware that if you can't read Japanese, it is easier said than done. I found it impossible to win a boy without the aid of a capture guide, which I buckled into finding after not winning anyone several times in a row. However, with the capture guide provided in the Downloads section below, it shouldn't be difficult to snag all the CGs and endings.

    Troubleshooting

When I went to play this game, I ran into a problem where the game asked for an activation code after clicking the game .exe file. The message looked like this:

However, I found a fix around this. First, hold down Ctrl and F1 at the same time, and then double-click the sbfv.exe file. A window will pop up with a long field to input a key, with an OK button below it. Type in "oumihakkei" in the input field, and hit okay. You'll notice a "forcekey.ini" file be created in your game directory. Then doubleclick the sbfv.exe and it should load the game up fine. You only have to do this once, and then you should be able to click the game .exe and have it load the game normally.

As far as running the game, I had no trouble on my Windows XP system set into Japanese. However, I did apply the update patch first: I suggest you do as well to make sure the game runs smoothly.

AGTH Compatibility - Shounen-tachi no Byoutou Full Voice Version is completely compatible with Anime Games Text Hooker. First, make sure to patch the game, so that when you make your shortcut to the game .exe, it will be the correct .exe applied from the patch.

    Review

After playing the remake of the original Shounentachi no Byoutou, I found that Shounentachi no Byoutou Full Voice Version isn't much different than the original at all.

Obviously, the main difference is that the game is now voiced. Since the cast is nearly all young boys, most of the characters are voiced by female seiyuu, who do a very good job in this role. However, there are those picky fangirls out there that aren't interested unless big-name male seiyuu are involved, and if you fall in that category, then you probably will not be interested in the voiced version of this game.

There also are some other bright sides of the game compared to the original. For one, the music on this version, while not being that great, is far better than the screechy midis on the original. They also added an ending theme, "Kindness," which is quite beautiful, and better yet, Singing Canary offers the full version of it as a free download at their site. Also, now you can save at any time, while in the original version you had to visit the Nurse's Station, which took up one of your actions for the day, in order to save your game.

The thing that really pleased me, though, is that /finally/ you can get the CGs in their full 640x480 resolution, /without/ little buttons obstructing the image, something that drove me out of my mind with the original version of the game. Now in-game you can hide all the windows from the screen to fully view the image, and you can also view the full image unhindered from the CG gallery. However, there are no new CGs added to the Voice Version, which was a major letdown: why release a newer, "better" version of a game and not even include a little additional art? The game only has the same 50 images by Gokurakuin Sakurako (mangaka of Juvenile Orion) that were in the original version of the game.

The game certainly isn't improved in plotline, either. The plotline has been reworked a bit, as the visiting order and options have changed from the original, but not by much. There is, however, one feature that will likely excite a lot of people: in the Omake folder on the game disk, there is a .pdf file of the game script translated into English by the staff of Singing Canary. The script isn't 100% error-proof, and does have some typos and other errors, but over all is fairly well done, definitely more like "English" and less like "Engrish". It's a lengthy document, at 461 pages, since it is the Japanese dialogue and then the translation written below, but since I read through all 461 pages, I can break it down for those only interested in certain scenerios: Pg. 1-6 cover the opening, 6-85 cover Shingo, 86-159 cover Akira, 159-245 cover Keisuke, 246-342 cover Haruka, 342-369 cover Kaoru, 369-375 are the endings, 375-417 the inter-play events, and 417-461 the random events. I found that it was pretty impossible to "follow along" with the script as I played: it was just far easier to play and then read the character's scenerio in the script afterwards. But even though there is an English script, that doesn't mean that there is much of a plotline to read in it; the story to the game is just bland.

There really aren't any other changes between Shounentachi no Byoutou and the Full Voice Version. All the characters are the same (several of which are quite shouta, so if that bothers you, you will definitely want to stay clear), and the game is the same short length of 14 days, with the exact same play style, only the options have been modified slightly (I have made a new capture guide that follows this version of the game, which is available for download above).

Even though some improvements were made in Shounentachi no Byoutou Full Voice Version, overall it still isn't any better of a game. If they were going to do a new version by adding voice, they should've gone the whole way, and not only added voice, but also new art, new features... and a real story would be nice. If you've already played the original version, you won't really find much here of notable interest. If you haven't played the game before and have an interest in it, then I definitely suggest getting this voiced version rather than the original. It may not be remarkably better, but it at least does have some good advantages over the original version of the game.
